Nikon d3000 Review

” Nikon D3000 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens “

Nikon D3000 Overview

The Nikon D3000 is a new entry-level DSLR camera designed to make photography simple and accessible. Aimed at the complete beginner, the Nikon D3000 is primarily aimed at anyone who wants to take photos without having to worry about what the camera is doing. The intelligent Guide Mode asks you about the image you want to capture and automatically optimizes the settings for the best possible results. When you’ve gained more experience, you can then use the Guide Mode to find out how to adjust the settings yourself. The Nikon D3000 also features a 10.2 megapixel sensor, EXPEED processing system, 3-inch LCD screen, 3 fps continuous shooting and 11-point autofocus system. The Nikon D3000 is available now for £429.99 / €522.00 body-only or £499.99 / €607.00 / $599.95 with the 18-55mm VR kit lens.

Nikon D3000 vs Nikon D5000: Key Differences

The Nikon D3000 is pretty closely related to the D5000. There are important differences though, which are detailed here.

  • 10 MP CCD sensor (Nikon D5000: 12.3 MP CMOS)
  • Fixed LCD screen (Nikon D5000: Tilt/swivel screen)
  • No Live View (Nikon D5000: Live View with contrast detect AF)
  • No movie mode (Nikon D5000: Movie Mode with contrast detect AF)
  • More limited ISO range (100-3200 as opposed to 200-6400)
  • No control of Active D-Lighting intensity (D5000: choice of ‘low, normal, high’)
  • No automatic lateral chromatic aberration correction (available in D5000)
  • No choice of JPEG quality in RAW+JPEG shooting (JPEG basic available only)
  • Slower continuous shooting (3fps compared to 4fps from the D5000)
  • No exposure bracketing (available in D5000)

Nikon D3000 Conclusion
Pro: Con:
  • Small body with a good grip
  • Easy handling, nice simple camera for novices, yet features to grow into
  • Quiet shutter sound
  • Does good job of holding highlight and shadow detail
  • “Active D-Lighting” contrast-control option works very well
  • Kit lens offers VR (Vibration Reduction, aka Image Stabilization)
  • Good, fine-grained adjustment of color saturation
  • Good continuous-shooting speed, buffer depth, and buffer-clearing speed for an entry-level camera
  • No “early shutter” penalty in normal shooting for being too quick on the shutter button
  • Good low-light capability: Good white balance, exposure, focus and image quality
  • Very good printed results in terms of detail, capable of producing good 13×19-inch prints from ISO 100 to 800
  • AF system is occasionally unreliable
  • AF points are difficult to see
  • Very bright (saturated) color (but easy to dial down if you prefer)
  • Our sample showed two clusters of hot pixels at all ISO levels, even at fairly high light levels (very unusual)
  • Inconsistent flash exposure
  • Viewfinder accuracy was below average: Viewfinder view was rotated slightly vs the image sensor
  • Viewfinder is cramped, though not more so than others at this price point
  • No Live View mode
  • There is an “early shutter” penalty in flash mode
  • Auto white balance too yellow under household incandescent lighting
  • Kit lens is unspectacular optically: Somewhat soft in corners, soft wide open at telephoto, noticeable chromatic aberration in corners at wide angle, and high geometric distortion
  • Printed images dramatically reveal oversaturated color
